The Law Society of Northern Ireland has joined a coalition of leading legal organisations from around the world in signing a joint statement condemning the United States government’s escalating actions targeting legal professionals both internationally and domestically.

The joint statement highlights a series of alarming developments including sanctions against International Criminal Court (ICC) officials, political interference in domestic prosecutions, and the intimidation of legal professionals and institutions within the US.  These actions amount to violations of international human rights law and pose a direct threat to the rule of law and the independence of the legal profession. The Law Society of Northern Ireland joins numerous international bar associations in expressing concern.

“The developments in the United States are deeply concerning and have implications for the legal community here in Northern Ireland. International firms operating in our jurisdiction are now being pressured by political forces beyond our borders, affecting their independence, operations, and professional obligations. The global legal community must remain united in upholding the rule of law and protecting the right of all lawyers to practise without political interference.”

Colin Mitchell
President, Law Society of Northern Ireland

The joint statement calls on the US government to:

  • Rescind sanctions on ICC personnel and their families;
  • End all forms of intimidation and improper interference with legal professionals; and
  • Uphold the UN Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers, which guarantee the independence and protection of the legal profession.

The Law Society of Northern Ireland reiterates its commitment to the independence of lawyers and the integrity of legal institutions, both at home and internationally.
